Ontario’s Athlete Advertising Restrictions: The 2023–24 Record

The AGCO announcement and implementation date, including the responsible-gambling exception, reconstructed independently at the original URL.

Announcement and implementation are different dates

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario announced on August 29, 2023 that its internet gaming advertising standards would restrict the use of athletes. Its announcement gave February 28, 2024 as the implementation date. The AGCO’s 2023–24 annual report subsequently described the changes and their responsible-advertising context.

The athlete rule and the minors-appeal rule differ

The announced standard covered active and retired athletes with a direct or indirect arrangement involving an operator or gaming-related supplier. It retained a narrow exception when the exclusive purpose was advocating responsible gambling practices. Separate language addressed figures such as influencers, celebrities and entertainers likely to appeal to minors. These categories should not be collapsed into an assertion that every public figure is prohibited in every context.

Keep the jurisdiction visible

This record concerns Ontario’s internet gaming framework. It is not a United States advertising rule or a claim that every Canadian province has identical conditions. Before assessing a current campaign, use the regulator’s current standards and guidance rather than treating a historical announcement as a complete present-day compliance opinion.

The underlying action dates to 2023–24. This article’s October 2026 publication date records the independent rewrite, not a newly introduced restriction. No athlete endorsement, interview or advertisement from the former external article has been reproduced.
