Ontario casino bargaining: the 2022 record
Unifor’s July 2022 strike mandate and August tentative agreements in Ontario, with authorisation, negotiation and ratification kept distinct.

The July 2022 bargaining deadline
On July 18, 2022, Unifor reported that casino workers at six Great Canadian Gaming locations in Ontario had authorised strike action if agreements were not reached by the July 22 deadline. The union described its bargaining priorities as wages, benefits, pensions and opportunities for casual workers to obtain full-time jobs.
That report establishes a mandate and a conditional deadline. A vote authorising action does not itself prove that every covered location stopped operating at that moment. This article preserves the historical topic and dates; it does not report a new strike in October 2026.
The subsequent Pickering and Ajax announcement
On August 4, 2022, Unifor announced tentative agreements for workers at the Pickering and Ajax casinos. Its statement said ratification votes were scheduled for August 5. A tentative agreement means negotiators have reached terms that still require the stated approval process.
The August statement should therefore not be shortened into a claim that the contracts had already been ratified on August 4. This reconstruction does not claim a later voting result without a separate confirming source, and it avoids assigning one precise strike-start date across different locations.
Four stages worth keeping separate
A strike mandate gives the union authority to act under the process described in its announcement. Bargaining continues between the parties. A tentative settlement records proposed terms, and ratification is the membership decision on those terms. Clear reporting identifies which stage has actually been documented.
This distinction also improves coverage of operational effects. An authorisation headline alone is insufficient evidence for a claim that a casino is closed, that every service has stopped or that every bargaining unit has the same outcome. Those statements need location-specific, dated evidence.
The source perspective
Both cited publications come from Unifor. They are primary evidence of the union’s announcements and stated priorities, rather than an independently obtained employer response or an interview conducted by Casino Education. The story should retain that attribution.
The independently written article replaces the previous external text while retaining its URL. Its practical value is the documented sequence from the July mandate to the August tentative agreements, with the limits of the available record visible. Readers seeking current employment or visitor information should consult current location notices rather than rely on this 2022 bargaining history.
