Casino Identity Checks vs Location Checks: What Each One Establishes

Separate casino identity verification, physical-location checks and login authentication, with Michigan regulatory and US operator examples.

A verified identity does not establish where a player is standing. A successful location check does not establish who controls the account. Online casino access can depend on both, alongside separate login security and product eligibility requirements. Understanding which check failed makes a support request more useful than treating every restriction as an account-verification problem.

This guide examines primary records checked November 3, 2026. Michigan’s regulator supplies a jurisdiction-specific identity example; DraftKings’ US support explains document verification; Hollywood Casino documents physical-location checks. These examples do not create a single national account status.

Three questions, three kinds of evidence

CheckQuestion it addressesWhat it does not establish alone
Identity and age verificationDoes the registration match an eligible real person?Current physical location or permission for every product
GeolocationIs the device/player within the permitted wagering area?Ownership of identity documents or payment accounts
Login authenticationDoes this sign-in satisfy the account’s security controls?Completion of all identity, location and wagering checks

Identity is more than receiving an email

DraftKings’ US account verification instructions distinguish automated checks from non-automated document review. They identify full legal name, physical home address and date of birth, with SSN requirements depending on the product. Where automated verification fails, the operator describes a secure document-upload route for government-issued identification.

Follow the request inside the genuine account or its official support channel. Keep the submitted details consistent with your documents and ask support about a genuine mismatch. Completing a document upload is a submission milestone; wait for the result rather than describing the account as approved immediately.

Michigan’s regulatory example has its own scope

The MGCB’s memorandum dated November 4,2024 addresses identity verification and strong authentication for Michigan internet gaming and sports betting platforms. It explains that identity must be verified before account creation and wagering, and sets requirements for new accounts and accounts integrated from other purposes. Its implementation deadline was March 4,2025. These are dates in the regulatory record, not a new November 2026 policy announcement.

The memo also addresses protecting existing accounts against unauthorised access. This helps explain why a later authentication request can concern account control even after identity information was supplied. It does not mean every operator will show the same message, request the same document or complete a review within one universal period.

Location is a separate live access check

Hollywood’s geolocation instructions say it verifies physical location during use. They cover mobile permissions and desktop GeoComply checks, and identify VPN/proxy use and remote-desktop software as obstacles. An identity document showing an in-state address is therefore not a substitute for the product’s physical-location verification.

Enable the permissions requested by the official product and follow its troubleshooting guidance. Do not disguise a location or borrow an account. A sign-in, visible balance or promotion page should not be treated as proof that a real-money wager is authorised.

Describe the failed stage accurately

Record whether the message concerns personal information, an uploaded document, a login code or location detection. Give support the exact error, device and relevant time through the official channel, without posting identity documents publicly. Ask which stage remains incomplete before adding funds.

Our casino app guide focuses on installation and permissions. The brand and licence guide explains how to identify the underlying licensed product. Neither a familiar brand nor one passed check overrides the remaining conditions.
